Aldershot v Pompey: PREVIEW

Pompey return to England for their third friendly of the pre-season campaign. This time they travel to the EBB (Recreation) Stadium to take on Aldershot Town.

Team News

We’re likely taking stabs in the dark as to who will line up for Pompey, as Michael Appleton lines up his group of trialists, youngsters and even a Pompey coach to take on Aldershot.

Izale McLeod is expected to start up-front for the Blues after committing himself to the Pompey cause and shaking off an injury picked up against Brighton in Spain, whilst Brian Howard is likely to feature despite giving Pompey a deadline day of today to sign him up.

It is also expected that trial quartet Luke Rodgers, Jon Harley, Liam Walker and Mustapha Dumbuya will feature for most of the game, whilst the rest is expected to be lined up with youngsters including Ashley Harris, Adam Webster, Sam Magri, Dan Thompson, Jed Wallace, Dan Butler, and Elliot Wheeler.

It’s unlikely Dave Kitson, Tal Ben-Haim and Liam Lawrence will feature as the remaining senior trio look for exits out of the club.

New Pompey coach Ashley Westwood could even provide some cover for the youngsters in defence and pull on a Pompey shirt yet again.

Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth has got a full and fit squad at his selection – something Appleton could only dream of right now!

History

The two teams have only met on ten occasions with Pompey coming out as the better side head-to-head. Pompey have won on five occasions and drawn three times, whilst tonight’s home side have only won twice.

The last time the two teams met was back in December 1982 at Fratton Park in an FA Cup tie that saw Pompey lose to the Shots 3-1 – in fact, Pompey haven’t beaten Aldershot at Fratton Park since 1976.

However, the Blues did win at the Recreation Ground in 1980 when they were victorious 2-1.

Following relegation to League One, Pompey still remain one flight above tonight’s League Two visitors.
