Plymouth v Pompey : PREVIEW

Michael Appleton’s Pompey travel to Home Park, for the newly renamed Capital One Cup 1st round tie.  This represents Pompey’s first competitive game of the season but instead of a fresh start, plenty of questions still hang over the future of the Blues. Plymouth welcome Appleton’s charges and will be encouraging their supporters to create a friendly atmosphere assist in raising money for the Pompey Supporters Trust.

Team News

Pompey look set to field a team of development players after failing to confirm any new signings other than goalkeeper Simon Eastwood, before the 12pm deadline.

Assistant coash Ashley Westwood is registered to play so may well feature, but the Pompey team to include Adam Webster, Sam Magri, Daniel Thompson and Ashley Harris.

Loan deals may still be completed, as they are allowed up until 3 hours before the game.

Plymouth look set to hand starts to summer signing Rhys Griffiths and Johnny Gorman.

Darren Purse will captain the pilgrims after becoming skipper on a permanent basis, however Jamie Lowry will miss out after suffering an ankle injury.

History

The so called ‘battle of the ports’ has been contested 51 times in all, Pompey having the upper hand having been victorious 24 times, compared to 20 Plymouth wins.

The most recent clash between the sides came in Pompey’s 2008 winning FA Cup campaign, goals from Lassana Diarra and Niko Kranjcar overturning Chris Clarks’ 5th minute opener.

The last league cup side between these sides was played over two legs in 1998, Pompey recording a 6-3 aggregate victory.
