Michael Appleton’s Pompey travel to Home Park, for the newly renamed Capital One Cup 1st round tie. This represents Pompey’s first competitive game of the season but instead of a fresh start, plenty of questions still hang over the future of the Blues. The so called ‘battle of the ports’ has been contested 51 times in all, Pompey having the upper hand having been victorious 24 times, compared to 20 Plymouth wins.
The most recent clash between the sides came in Pompey’s 2008 winning FA Cup campaign, goals from Lassana Diarra and Niko Kranjcar overturning Chris Clarks’ 5th minute opener.
The last league cup side between these sides was played over two legs in 1998, Pompey recording a 6-3 aggregate victory.
